“Businesses at Shaftesbury’s Wincombe Centre have bounced back from the difficult trading times of COVID, and more women are now starting up new enterprises. “I’ve been here since 2009, and it was all men when we first came in. But I’d say that 60% of the workforce here are now women,” says Wendy Ibbotson, the manager of the centre that provides hourly, daily, or permanent office space.
At 11 a.m. on Thursday, 28th September, Wincombe Centre will launch a regular gathering where all local businesses can share ideas, leads, and problems.
Wendy says there’s a supportive and collaborative approach amongst her tenants, and Louise Davis of Honour Jewellery, one of the centre’s newest occupants, agrees. “It’s a nice environment and good to be working with other women who run businesses,” says Louise. She’s keen to spread the word about the first get-together. “It’s an informal event, and if you’re working on your own, you’re a sole trader, or part of a bigger company and want to meet other local businesses, we’re going to run these bi-monthly and support a different charity each time,” says Louise. The first beneficiary will be Shaftesbury’s Brave and Determined Company. The charity’s trustees were fulfilling orders for their leisurewear from home, but like many of Wendy’s tenants, they wanted to separate business from domestic life, so they’ve rented space for their headquarters”
